Newsweek Japan devoted its December 12, 2017 cover story to a special discussion group at Columbia University on “War Stories: Memory and History” that is led by Carol Gluck, the George Sansom Professor of History and Chair of the Committee on Global Thought.
Participants in the discussion group included 20 undergraduate and graduate students from Columbia College, Columbia SIPA, the M.A. in Regional Studies – East Asia (MARSEA) program, the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, the M.A. program in Oral History, the M.A. program in the Department of Political Science, and the Ph.D. program in the Department of Sociology.
The anniversary of Pearl Harbor was the initial topic of the discussion group, in which Professor Gluck and the students engaged in a conversation about historical memory. Professor Gluck’s comments and the students’ responses to her questions are included verbatim in the Newsweek Japan article. Professor Gluck plans to hold three more sessions of the discussion group in the coming weeks.
The article will be available to read online soon–please check here for the link in the coming days.
