We are pleased to announce that the Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute Ethnic Conflict and Protest in Tibet and Xinjiang: Unrest in China’s West, co-edited by Gray Tuttle, the Leila Hadley Luce Associate Professor of Modern Tibetan Studies at Columbia University, and Ben Hillman, Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University’s Crawford School, was listed as one 2016’s best books on human rights by Kong Tsung-gan.
The book, a Study of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute published by Columbia University Press, presents readers with an anthology of essays and articles about the recent unrest in Xinjiang and Tibet. Through on-the-ground interviews and firsthand observations, the international experts in the volume create a record of the conflicts and protests as they have unfolded—the most extensive chronicle of events to date. The authors examine the factors driving the unrest in Tibet and Xinjiang and the political strategies used to suppress them. They also explain why certain areas have seen higher concentrations of ethnic-based violence than others.
