“The Growth and Development of Chinese NGOs Domestically and Abroad, and its Implications for International Affairs”
Reza Hasmath, Professor, University of Alberta
Moderator: Yao Lu, Associate Professor of Sociology
Thursday, November 15, 2018
12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
International Affairs Building, Room 918
This talk first looks at the strategies Chinese NGOs employ domestically to survive and operate in its current environment. It thereafter poses the query – drawing upon fieldwork evidence from Africa and Southeast Asia – what happens when Chinese NGOs that are born and socialized in such a domestic environment, are now “going out” to other jurisdictions with similar or varying political and economic regime types? Finally, the talk will suggest that the hyper-internationalization of Chinese social organizations will foster an equally hyper-pluralized global civil society that will beg us to rethink our understanding of salient precepts and operations in international affairs.
