Research Interest

Konchok Gelek (Gengqiugelai FNU)'s research focuses on urbanization in the aftermath of an earthquake that struck Yushu city, Qinghai province, China, analyzing it through the lens of frontier resource, territorialization, and rural-urban migration dynamics. He obtained his doctoral degree from the Department of Geography at the University of Zurich, with a specialization in Urbanization, Post-earthquake Reconstruction, and Land Property Relations in Qinghai Province, China. 

Konchok Gelek's secondary research interests revolve around Tibetan culture, linguistics, and literature. He holds a master's degree in International Sustainable Development from the Heller School at Brandeis University, which has enriched his understanding of rural Tibetan social development. Additionally, his BA degree in Tibetan Linguistics and Literature has been instrumental in advancing his expertise in modern Tibet studies. He explores ethnographic research focused on linguistic and cultural aspect of Tibetan society. 

As a Research Scholar, Konchok will take on the responsibility of teaching one course per semester while conducting his research. One of the courses is a seminar in his area of expertise, catering to advanced undergraduate and MA students. He will actively participate in collaborative projects with fellow Tibetan studies scholars, staff, and students, while engaging in day-to-day WEAI programs and events.
