This panel will address China’s recent “Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress” from the perspective of Chinese law, history, and politics and with particular focus on what it means for ethnic minorities and non-Han languages and cultures in the PRC in Xi Jinping’s “New Era.”
Speakers' Bios:
Dr. Aaron Glasserman is a scholar of China and a Distinguished Fellow at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University. His research examines Chinese politics, history, and society and what they mean for the rest of the world, particularly the Middle East as well as the United States. A frequent commentator on Chinese affairs and US-China relations, Dr. Glasserman writes for policy and public audiences as well as scholarly ones: his work has appeared in The China Quarterly, The Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient, The International Journal of Asian Studies, and Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, as well as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, ChinaFile, China Brief, and publications by the National Bureau of Asian Research. He has held research positions at Harvard University, Princeton University, and the University of Pennsylvania and received a PhD in History from Columbia University in 2021 and a BA in Near Eastern Studies (summa cum laude) with certificates in Chinese and Arabic from Princeton University in 2013. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has also held non-resident and professional fellowships at the Wilson Center, the Center for a New American Security, the Institute for Global Affairs at Eurasia Group, and the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
