Please join the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University, the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, and Columbia Global Centers | Beijing for a conversation with Baochang Guo and Qingmei Tao, authors of a recent publication on the theories and practices of Peking opera, An Extraordinary Game: What’s So Good About Peking Opera?.
The event also brings together an outstanding group of scholars working on pre-modern and modern Chinese literature and theater and on broader media cultures, including film, performance art, and new media. They will provide valuable comments on the book and share their insights on the unique charm and aesthetics of Peking opera.
About the Authors
Baochang Guo is a leading director whose creative career has spanned four decades and whose work has innovatively engaged with multiple media (opera, spoken drama, film, and television). A life-long lover and practitioner of Peking opera, Guo in this book explores Peking opera as history, philosophy, practice, and experience, offering new paradigms to understand Peking opera as both rooted in broader Chinese aesthetic traditions, and as embodied and reflexive practices by practitioners who work daily on the theater stage.
Qingmei Tao is a prolific scholar of Chinese drama in modern and contemporary times, whose intellectual work on drama is productively complemented by her long-standing engagement as a critic and educator in China’s flourishing contemporary theater scene.
