Moderator: Paul Kreitman, Assistant Professor of 20th Century Japanese History, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University

This talk will offer a new approach to the idea of the local within and between empires. It looks at the regional associations that connected Japan's provincial migrants - both within colonial society abroad and back to their hometowns. The publications of these associations allow us to reconstruct snapshots of colonial society across Japan's imperial cities. They reveal, in the case of Fukuoka's Prefectural Associations, how people from this region viewed, understood, and moved within the Japanese empire and beyond.

This event is sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
