Speaker: Pema Tso, Chief Editor of the Tibet Times (Dharamsala, India).

Discussant:  Tenzin D. Tsagong (Editorial Assistant, The New York Times

After briefly covering her personal journey from nomadic childhood in China to a Tibetan Chief Editor in exile, Pema Tso will discuss the issues and challenges of news reporting and editing in a diaspora community.  She will touch on topics of transnationalism, censorship, and the challenges facing investigative reporting, as well as economic and political issues.

Speaker's Bio: Pema Tso was born to a nomad family in the Mewa region of Amdo, Tibet. Defying her family's wishes, she applied and was admitted to Sichuan University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese and Tibetan language. In 2006, she decided to visit India and was forced by circumstances to stay.  She then worked as a teacher at the Tibetan Children's Village Suja School for refugees, her dream job, but lacking the formal qualifications to remain a teacher, she turned to journalism where she quickly moved up through the ranks. Since 2013, she has worked for Tibet Times (Tib.་བོད་ཀྱི་དུས་བབ།), founded in 1996.  To this day, it remains the leading independent Tibetan-managed and native-language news source in the world. Since 2018, she has served as Chief Editor and is the first ever female editor for this  paper. Under her leadership, the paper now hosts video programs and an English website with daily news items.

This event is hosted by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and co-sponsored by the Modern Tibetan Studies Program.
