This talk offers a nuanced exploration of China's legal profession, focusing on three key aspects: the embeddedness between judges and lawyers, examining how familiarity within judge-lawyer pairs may influence trial outcomes; the effects of lawyer mobility and cross-regional practice on legal services; and the impact of national infrastructure projects, such as high-speed rail development, on legal representation. Through these lenses, we aim to provide insights into the complex dynamics shaping China's evolving legal landscape, highlighting the interplay between personal relationships, professional mobility, and national development initiatives.
Speaker's Bio: Yu Xiaohong is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University. Her primary research interests include Chinese politics, comparative judicial politics, and empirical legal studies. Her scholarly work has been featured in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, China Quarterly, American Review of Public Administration, and publications from Cambridge University Press, among others.
