The incarceration and mass resettlement of Japanese Americans in New York during the World War II era represents a remarkable chapter within the wartime experience, as well as a decisive stage in the evolution of the city's ethnic Japanese population. Hundreds of Japanese aliens were confined at Ellis Island before being freed or transported elsewhere, and their lives were shattered. Conversely, the Issei and Nisei from the camps who arrived in Manhattan initially experienced some economic dislocation and racial discrimination, but they joined with established residents to form a cohesive and politically engaged community.
