Speaker: Sixiang Wang, Associate Professor, Asian Languages and Cultures, UCLA

Moderator: Jungwon Kim, King Sejong Associate Professor of Korean Studies, EALAC, Columbia University

A 45-50-minute talk followed by Q and A. Dr. Wang will discuss his book on the history of Chosŏn Korea’s diplomacy with Ming China through the lens of rhetoric and ritual.

Published by Columbia University Press in 2023, Boundless Winds of Empire: Rhetoric and Ritual in Early Choson Diplomacy with Ming China is the winner of the 2024 Hong Yung Lee Book Award in Korean Studies from the Center for Korean Studies at UC Berkeley and the 2025 James B. Palais Prize from the Association of Asian Studies.

This event is hosted by the Center for Korea Research and co-sponsored by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
