Moderator: Nicholas Bartlett, Assistant Professor of Contemporary Chinese Culture and Society, AMEC/EALAC, Barnard College

Steppe Immunity is an exploration of the political concept of immunity, darkhlaa, as it developed on the Mongolian steppe. During the Mongol empire, immunity was a status of privilege and exemption bestowed by the sovereign, similar to the category of immunitas in Ancient Rome. During the socialist period, the exemptions of immunity no longer protected, but endangered its bearers. In democratic Mongolia, the discourse of immunity has evolved again to refer to the need to protect Mongolian cultural identity, political independence, and national territory from the economic, cultural, and military power of its neighbors, China and Russia. By exploring the different historical faces of immunity, the talk will pose the question of whether or not a global form of immunity is possible.

Speaker's Bio: Christian Sorace is a Lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College. He is the author of Shaken Authority: China's Communist Party and the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, co-editor of Afterlives of Chinese Communism: Political Concepts from Mao to Xi and Proletarian China: A Century of Chinese Labour. He is currently writing a book on the crisis of democracy in post-socialist Mongolia.
