The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is pleased to welcome Sau-yi Fong as the academic director of the Master of Arts in Regional Studies: East Asia (MARSEA) program, effective July 1, 2025.
Dr. Fong brings experience and a long affiliation with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute to her new position. She received her PhD from Columbia’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) in 2022, focusing on Chinese military history, maritime history, and the history of science and technology, and from 2023 to 2025 she worked at WEAI as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar focusing on modern China.
Dr. Fong’s recent publications include articles in the academic journals Late Imperial China (2022) and Modern China (2023). She is currently working on a book that examines late Qing China’s naval rebuilding project as a means of exploring the politics of military-industrial technological transfer to China from the West in the 19th century.
We would also like to thank Kim Brandt for her many dedicated years of service at WEAI as academic director of MARSEA and as a research scholar studying Japanese history. Dr. Brandt also received her PhD from Columbia’s EALAC department.
