On Thursday, April 13, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Lien-Hang Nguyen, convened a panel discussion at the request of Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy of the Vietnam Permanent Mission to the United Nations on the development of capitalism to advise Vietnam’s government for its upcoming Five Year Congress.
Ambassador Quy and four strategists from Vietnam’s Central Commission of Theoretical Studies (CCTS) comprised the Vietnamese delegation. The panel considered wealth inequality, which is a substantial problem in Vietnam, and identified key lessons from the US and other experiences of capitalism to understand how to replicate or avoid particular trends. The discussants sought to identify lessons about capitalism in a fast changing technological era that are applicable to Vietnam in order to find an equitable, stabilizing pathway forward for the country.
