Call for Applications: Chinese Language Fellowship Program from the National Bureau of Asian Research

The Chinese Language Fellowship Program (CLFP) at the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is now accepting applications for the 2025-26 academic year, with an application deadline of February 17, 2025.

The United States needs scholars who possess deep understanding of China's contemporary politics, society, and modern history, along with Chinese language fluency. These specialists are vital for informing U.S. public policy and training future generations of American experts.

Fellowship Overview
The CLFP supports American graduate students with fellowships up to $50,000 for one year of intensive Chinese language training in Taiwan or China. Funding covers tuition, housing, living expenses, and related costs.

Two Fellowship Tracks:

Prospective PhD Track (up to $40,000)

  1. Open to both current MA students and recent graduates planning PhD studies
  2. 10-month language program in Taiwan or China

PhD Track (up to $50,000)

  1. For currently enrolled PhD students
  2. 10-month program plus summer session with dissertation-focused tutorials in Taiwan or China.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Intermediate or Advanced Chinese language ability
  2. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
  3. Commitment to full-time intensive language study
  4. Interest in advancing U.S.-China policy or scholarly research

Application Requirements

  1. Two-page summary resume
  2. Two-page cover letter
  3. Completed application form
  4. Academic transcripts
  5. Two letters of recommendation:
    • Academic supervisor/professor
    • Recent Chinese language teacher
