Call for Submissions: Student Essay for the Reed Newsletter

February 04, 2021

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is seeking essay submissions from current Columbia graduate and undergraduate students for the Spring 2021 issue of The Reed,  the WEAI's annual alumni newsletter. The editorial team of The Reed will select one essay upon which the theme of the newsletter will be based. Preference will be given to essays that can be connected to the work of WEAI faculty and scholars.

Prompt

What do you believe is the most pressing issue facing East, Inner, or Southeast Asia today, and how does your current research seek to address that issue? How does that issue impact your research?

**As the theme of the Spring 2020 issue of The Reed was The COVID-19 Pandemic, we ask that students' Spring 2021 essay submissions differ from last year’s theme.

Requirements

The essay must be a polished piece of academic quality work between 300-800 words in length. Citations are welcome but not required. The citation format is the choice of the student. One entry per student. No co-authors, please. Students may submit their essay in Word or PDF format. Students from any Columbia University degree program may submit an entry.

Prize

The student whose essay is selected will receive a $250 prize. The essay will also be featured at the front of the Spring 2021 issue of The Reed.

Please send submissions to [email protected] with the subject line "The Reed Student Essay Submission." The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 1st, 2021 at 5:00 PM EST. Late submissions will NOT be accepted.

The Weatherhead East Asian Institute reserves the right to determine the theme of the Spring 2021 issue if an insufficient number of submissions are received by the deadline, or if the submissions do not adequately address the prompt or abide by the requirements.

Please contact the Weatherhead East Asian Institute's Student Affairs Officer, Elizabeth Peiffer, at [email protected] with any questions.
