In Light of Continued Violence Against Asians in the New York Area

Editor's note:

A message from the Office of University Life

March 21, 2022

Dear Students,

I’m writing to you in light of another recent attack against an Asian person in the New York City area. Over the past two years, we have seen a rise in incidents of bias and hostility toward people of Asian descent. These hateful acts – and the misinformed beliefs often driving them – have deep historical roots in this country. As a University community, we denounce these acts of violence and recognize the direct impact such acts have on our Columbia community, especially our Asian and Asian American members.

I know that many are experiencing heightened concern and anxiety in light of the increased reports of violent crime. At difficult times, it can be helpful to come together as a community. University Life, in partnership with Columbia Health, CUIMC Student Health on Haven and Public Safety, is offering a supportive space for Asian and Asian American students on Wednesday, March 23 from 5:30-7 PM in the Dodge Room, Earl Hall on Morningside. This will be an opportunity to be together, discuss concerns and actions the University may be able to take to support students.

Additional Resources

Columbia's Department of Public Safety is offering a virtual Situational Awareness class TODAY at 4 PM ET, open to all students. Please also check their schedule often as these classes are offered regularly.

If you, or someone you know, has experienced bias, you can also report it to the University or contact your Dean of Students or University Life at [email protected].

You can learn about Resources for Combating Anti-Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Racism on the University Life website; this resource is also useful for allies.

If you need support, please reach out to your Dean of Students, or virtual health and counseling services (Morningside/Manhattanville and CUIMC), and Religious Life.
