Qin Gao has published a new study with Yi Wang, Fuhua Zhai, and Yixuan Wang, titled "Disparities in child cognitive skills by parental education in China: The roles of socio-demographics and parenting."

Research on disparities in child cognitive skills by parental education has been well established in the western countries. However, relatively little is known about the gaps in children's cognitive skills and the contributing factors such as parental education, parenting, and other socio-demographic variables in Asian countries, especially China.

This research investigates vocabulary and math gaps by parental education among children of 10–15 years old in China. It provides a snapshot of disparities in child cognitive skills by parental education in China and also decomposes socio-demographics and parenting factors to explore whether they play a significant role in contributing to these disparities adopting the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis. Analysis is conducted in the national sample and the subsamples of rural, urban, and migrant children to take into account their different economic and cultural settings.
